Andalusite is a really beautiful gemstone with strong pleochroism. It can show shades of green, brown, and red when viewed from different directions. It is a tough stone and is strikingly beautiful, but is largely unknown to the gem buying public. It has a hardness of 7-7.5. This type of gem can show up to three different colors (trichroism) depending on the viewing angle and the gem’s cut and orientation. Sometimes, andalusites can even show multiple colors from one viewing angle.
